This 2021 Advent painting was a very, very enjoyable painting, the fifth in the series of Liturgical Seasons.  The color composition was pre-determined, blue and white and I like using GOLD paint in all of them representing the Presence of God.

Because I was clear at the beginning of the composition and design, the painting progressed more smoothly.  I became aware that periodically during the painting sessions, I was repeating in my mind over and over… “The Coming of Christ.”

Having a clear concept in mind when one paints is a “must” and the clearer it is the easier the process; that was the case in this one.  As I neared the completion I strengthened the blue strokes and especially the white strokes.  The shape of the gold paint pouring down from the middle  top and spreading to the edges as it neared the bottom turned out to be a “surprise” to me.  I had not planned on it being so asymmetrical as the gold streaks and shapes reached further from each other and in a more unbalanced distribution at the base.

I didn’t perceive this until I had signed the painting (always, for me, declaring that I am finished with it).   I felt quite conflicted and wanted to balance the gold shapes and brushstrokes more evenly, but something in me resisted.

I felt later a very deep sense of the Holy Spirit speaking to me and bringing to my mind a verse from the book of John.  It is a sad, but true statement by the author of John, Chapter 1, verse 11.  “He came to what was His own, and his own people did not accept him.”

I was deeply struck by the power, reality and truth of that verse and believed that the Holy Spirit led me to paint an “uneven distribution” of gold paint brushstrokes at the bottom representing that fact (John 1:11)  from  2000 years ago up until this very day.

During a painting process the conscious mind and subconscious govern the work, as does, obviously, the Holy Spirit.

Thus, this  particular Liturgical Season of Advent artwork carries a powerful impression on my heart. The completion of this piece left me particularly spiritually inspired….perhaps Awestruck is a more accurate word!!
