Lent is the first painting in a series of artworks representing the different Liturgical seasons. The dominant color is PURPLE; as it happens, purple is one of my most favorite colors. I resonate strongly with the all the different shades and values of purples.
My concept in this case was rather simple, I wanted to portray the suggestion of the Cross using some horizontals and verticals. Compositionally they needed to be joined to form an integrated design. The use of gold paint for the diagonals connecting the two sides also served as the complementary color for purple which is a yellow shade. Using complementary colors and diagonals create a more dynamic, vibrant painting.
However, I found myself focusing too much on the technical aspect of this piece of artwork, and had to eventually face the fact I was avoiding the very significance of Lent, the period of time preceding the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. I realized I didn’t want to think about the Ultimate meaning of Lent because of the reality of the horrific crucifixion.
I started taking breaks, sometimes long ones. I needed to distract myself periodically from the meaning of Lent as it kept breaking into my consciousness as I was painting.
I took some time to pray about it. Not long after I resumed painting, I experienced something I had never felt before. I had to stop completely and just stand still…I sensed a quiet WIND blowing across my mind and heart, I knew it was the Holy Spirit and very suddenly I felt a profound and very intense emotion…the words came immediately…SACRIFICIAL LOVE!!! It was beyond anything I had ever felt so intensely and powerfully. I will always believe that it was God’s answer to my prayer to help me handle thinking about the horrible reality of what was coming for Christ. The emotion lasted a few seconds. I believe it was the emotion “beyond human love ” that can come only from of an all powerful, supernatural and loving God.
The gold diagonals from one side to the other represented -- DIVINITY MEETING HUMANITY THROUGH CHRIST JESUS! The SACRIFICIAL Love of God in Christ enables humans to spiritually unite with God to be made whole and to be healed.
This painting, will always have special significance for me due to my discomfort and the atrocious reality Christ went through for us. Without His allowing me to feel His Sacrificial Love, it would have been difficult for me to complete it without a struggle. It would have been reflected in the artwork…(not something artists ever want showing in their work!)
He enabled me to experience the very purpose of His coming into the world---Sacrificial Love, the ultimate God person in human form!
